What it is

PT-141 (bremelanotide) acts on melanocortin receptors in the brain, which play a role in sexual desire. It works on the brain rather than on blood flow, unlike medications such as sildenafil.

What the research shows

Bremelanotide was approved by the FDA in 2019 as Vyleesi to treat low sexual desire in premenopausal women. In clinical trials, the most common side effects were nausea, flushing, and headache, and it caused a short-lived rise in blood pressure.

How it's used

PT-141 is commonly supplied as a 10.0 mL vial at 2.0 mg/mL. A typical dose is 1.0 mg (50 units), injected under the skin, as needed, no more than once in 24 hours. Your prescriber sets your exact dose and schedule.
